Well reputed for its wildlife safaris, tourists come here to pay a visit to the Big 5, namely rhino, lion, leopard, buffalo, and elephant in the golden savannah. South Africa is also famous for its unique wildlife destinations such as private game reserves and luxury lounges.
The best time to visit South Africa wildlife destinations is in the summers between the months of December and March and in the winters between June and August because of the pleasant weather conditions during these months. For the South Africa safari specifically, the best time to visit is between May and October.
1. Kruger National Park
The Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa. All of the Big Five animals are found here: elephant, lion, rhino, leopard, and buffalo. There are also a lot of options for accommodation such as cottages, safaris, bungalows, campsites, and guest houses. It has over 100 species of mammals and reptiles, over 500 species of birds, 34 species of amphibians, and over 300 species of trees.
Sunset Rest Camp is among the best things you can spend your time doing here while on your South Africa wild safari. The drive leaves before dusk and returns after about 3 hours of dawn. It is pleasant in the afternoon when you will be watching a lot of species of herbivores.
The carnivores and omnivores are going to be visible at night, when they are planning to hunt. The expert guides will educate you about the flora and fauna as well as you drive through the various tree species.
Another great experience here is the Guided Bush Walks. The name says it all, you will be walking among the wildlife, trees, and birds. There is no experience more authentic than this. Of course, you will be accompanied by armed guards. Take on this experience and let nature and beauty exhilarate you and relieve you of all the stress you carry every day!
2. Pilanesberg National Park
This is the fourth largest National Park in South Africa and is usually one of the most accessible wildlife destinations in South Africa. It is only 3 hours away from the largest city in South Africa, Johannesburg.
There is huge flexibility in terms of where you want to stay while you are here from a Safari tent in the bush to a luxury lodge with the views of the Pilanesberg National Park.
One exceptional fact about this place is that it is relatively smaller in size and that means, there is a higher chance for you to come across the Big Five : elephant, lion, rhino, leopard, and buffalo.
While on your wild safari to the Pilanesberg Nation Park, be sure to visit the Mankwe Dam region. Since it is the largest body of water here, you are likely to see a lot of animals around here like zebras, wildebeest, waterbuck, and impala.
Not only this, you will also have a higher chance of watching birds like fish eagles, kingfishers, and cormorants flying around the breathtaking grassland. There is also a provision for hot air balloon rides which is an hour long and the ride is inclusive of wine, English breakfast, and even a ride to your hotel.
3. Dinokeng Game Reserve
Besides being a popular tourist spot, Dinokeng Game Reserve is also a spot for locals to relax and take a break. It is only a 40-minute drive from Pretoria. A lot of visitors choose to bring their own cars or rent one to drive around the 140 km long tracks.
While you are purchasing a permit to drive through the route at the gates of the reserve, be sure to grab a detailed map guide where you can also find places to stop for breaks and meals. You can buy both of these online as well.
There are also guided bush trips available. Two trained guides will be accompanying you. Again, these bush trips are where you can experience the Game Reserve in the most authentic way possible.
On foot, you will be able to get a hold of a lot more things that you might have otherwise missed. Be sure to carry enough water for this trip because while this is an amazing experience, it can be long and tiring depending on you.
4. Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay has one of the best collections of beaches in South Africa. Lookout beach is located near Hill Street and is a good spot to enjoy on the beach and spend your time doing nothing, or if you want, you can swim and surf as well with the lifeguards close by.
The central beach is popular among the locals and is crowded. This would be a good spot for hosting events in Plett and also, this is popularly a family destination, so if you are travelling as a family, there are a lot of options for you to pursue when you get there.
On the contrary, if you are looking to escape the crowd and spend some time alone or alone with your family or partner, Robberg Beach is a great option for you. This is the perfect place for you if you don’t want anyone or anything to distract you. Lifeguards are available only in the peak seasons at selected spots.
For hiking, Robberg Nature Reserve makes the top of the list. There are various tranquil tracks, and if you’re lucky, you might be able to spot some dolphins, seals, and whales in the waters nearby.
